Sven Yrvind constructs a gimbaled, swinging table for his boat to provide a stable surface for meals and a secure hatch closure during emergencies. The table design utilizes a pendulum mechanism where the reaction time is determined by the square root of the support length; a one-meter length provides a one-second reaction time. Yrvind incorporates a high support structure to allow the table to rotate fully, ensuring he can seal the hatch without abandoning his meal if a hazard arises.

The narrative shifts to Yrvind’s 1997 trip to Japan, where he sought to learn the traditional sculling technique known as yuloh. After hitchhiking to a remote village called Mone, he connected with a local oyster farmer, Hatakeyama, who was involved in reforestation efforts to improve coastal water quality. Yrvind spent time observing a traditional boat builder in the region, studying the construction and operation of local small craft to master the yuloh sculling oar. He now integrates these historical boat-building and propulsion techniques into his current projects.
