Personal EPIRBs and AIS beacons serve distinct rescue functions based on the proximity of potential help. An EPIRB, such as the ACR RescueQ Link Plus, transmits a 406 MHz signal with GPS coordinates directly to satellites, alerting national rescue services like the MCA or Coast Guard. This device is intended for deep-ocean, offshore use where no other vessels are nearby. Conversely, an AIS beacon broadcasts a signal to the chart plotters of nearby vessels, making it the primary tool for rescue in crowded waterways or coastal cruising.

AIS beacons typically mount inside a life jacket, using a lanyard attached to the bladder to trigger the antenna and electronics upon inflation. Proper installation is critical; if the lanyard catches on other gear like whistles or inflation valves, the unit may require manual assistance to deploy. Testing both devices regularly ensures functionality, though users must coordinate with local authorities before deactivating an accidentally triggered EPIRB to prevent unnecessary search-and-rescue responses.
