Sailing a boat onto and off of an anchor requires managing sail power and boat position to maintain control without an engine. When departing an anchorage, hoist the mainsail and keep the sheet loose to depower the sail while hauling the anchor.2:20 If solo, leave the sheets loose; with crew, have the helmsperson point the bow away from land or hazards before breaking the anchor from the seabed.2:04 To avoid pulling the boat into the anchor, pull in small amounts of chain and let the boat drift over the rode.3:49 When arriving at an anchorage, use the mainsail to ghost into position at a slow pace.8:07 Once the anchor is dropped, back the boat up by pushing the mainsail against the wind or by sailing over the anchor to pay out the rode until the hook sets.7:29 Practicing these maneuvers in light wind conditions builds the necessary skills for situations where the engine fails.10:15
