Johan and Malin apply exterior fiberglass lamination to their 50-foot sailboat hull, using a multi-layer process to build structural thickness. To prevent amino blush and ensure a clean surface for secondary bonding, they prime the cedar hull with epoxy and cover it with peel ply.1:13 Johan sands the hull lightly to remove epoxy pools and uneven spots caused by wrinkles in the peel ply.2:24 They mix epoxy at a 5-to-1 ratio by weight to ensure accuracy and use a slow hardener, maintaining a barn temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius with a diesel heater.6:04 The team prepares 110 square meters of 600-gram fiberglass cloth, cutting lengths to overlap at the centerline for added strength.17:10 During a two-day work session with a crew of four to five people, they successfully laminate approximately 80 square meters of the hull.26:49 They use peel ply at the leading edges to allow for continuous work sessions without compromising the secondary bond.19:09
