In 2011, the 48-foot steel yacht Berserk disappeared in Antarctica during an expedition led by Norwegian adventurer Jarl Andhoy.3:40 While Andhoy and crew member Samuel Massey were 200 kilometers inland attempting a 1,500-kilometer quad bike trek to the South Pole, three crew members—Robert Skanis, Tom Gisla Bellica, and Leonard Banks—remained aboard the vessel near Cape Roids on Ross Island.4:28 On February 21, the crew met with the New Zealand Navy patrol vessel Wellington, which provided a forecast of 60-knot southerly winds.5:22 The following afternoon, Berserk’s emergency beacon activated 18 nautical miles north of Scott Base.6:24 Responding vessels encountered 100-knot winds and 10-meter seas, but found no trace of the yacht.6:32 A damaged, empty life raft was recovered 45 miles from the beacon's position, but the three men were never found.8:07 Official investigations failed to determine why the crew left their anchorage or how the vessel was lost.
