Max, owner of the 42-ft sailboat Y2K, manages high energy demands by utilizing a 10-panel solar array configured to maximize output in low-light conditions. The current system includes two original 85-watt rigid panels, two 100-watt rigid panels, and four 118-watt Solbian flexible panels.1:03 To support the boat's lithium battery bank, Max installed the Solbian panels on a custom aluminum frame fabricated in Lautoka, Fiji, which attaches to the stern structure independently of the bimini to ensure rigidity.1:56 He wires the panels in series pairs, each connected to an individual Victron charge controller.3:18 This series configuration increases voltage, allowing the system to begin charging batteries earlier in the morning and later in the evening while permitting the use of smaller-gauge wiring.3:58 Data from the controllers is monitored via a Raspberry Pi and the Victron VRM portal.5:03 Max plans to replace six of the existing panels with two 450-to-500-watt units to increase total production by 25 percent and reduce the number of required charge controllers.5:26
