Orcas off the coasts of Spain and Portugal began ramming sailboat rudders repeatedly starting around 2020, and the behavior has since sunk multiple vessels.3:06 Researchers believe the pattern may have originated with a single female orca named White Gladys, who possibly suffered a traumatic encounter with a boat or fishing gear.4:51 Because orcas are highly intelligent and teach behaviors to one another, younger pod members appear to have copied the rudder-targeting technique.5:23 Scientists think the orcas are likely responding to rudder vibrations — interpreting the oscillating fiberglass as a fish tail or a toy — rather than acting out deliberate aggression.5:45 The practical danger is structural: a rudder is attached by a metal post that passes through the hull, and its removal leaves a hole at the waterline.4:29 Several boats have sunk after sustained attacks lasting two hours or more.4:17 Whale strikes by sperm whales and humpbacks are also documented, including the 1820 sinking of the whale ship Essex — the event that inspired Moby Dick — and a more recent Pacific collision that sank a cruising boat in 15 minutes.6:53 Three converging factors explain rising incident rates: recovering whale populations, more sailboats crossing migration routes, and social media accelerating incident reporting.7:21
