O que este vídeo aborda
Don McIntyre sails the 1990–1991 BOC Challenge, a 27,000-mile solo circumnavigation run in four legs: Newport, Rhode Island to Cape Town (6,500 miles), Cape Town to Sydney through the Southern Ocean, Sydney around Cape Horn to Punta del Este, Uruguay, and back to Newport.3:18 McIntyre and his wife Margie fund the campaign by selling their home, carrying over $300,000 in debt and paying $150 interest per day, with no corporate sponsor until a Sydney bakery signs on during the Sydney stopover.5:19 Four cameras and microphones mounted above and below deck record the voyage throughout.7:06 On the first leg McIntyre navigates a tropical depression near its eye, works through the doldrums at 1.5 knots, and crosses the equator for the first time, arriving in Cape Town 32 hours behind Servant and 9 hours behind City Kids.9:32 The Southern Ocean leg brings a generator fire, two failed autopilots, broken wind instruments, a kerosene-soaked bunk, a near-overboard incident clipped to the windward shrouds, snow, and a 50-knot gale approaching Cape Horn.30:25 Competitor John Martin strikes a growler and cracks his hull.56:55 McIntyre rounds Cape Horn five miles off in heavy seas, then loses a two-mile lead near Punta del Este when he is becalmed and Jack Boy passes him.1:13:53 On the final leg he carries a spinnaker for nearly four days in favorable conditions.1:26:26
