Is the "traveler" necessary?

O que este vídeo aborda

The mainsail traveler functions as a tool to adjust the boom's position relative to the boat's centerline without altering the sail's twist. When sailing upwind, the mainsheet serves two purposes: orienting the boom and tensioning the leech to control twist. Once the boom is near the centerline, further tension on the mainsheet primarily increases leech tension rather than moving the boom further inboard. By shifting the traveler car to windward, a sailor can center the boom while maintaining the desired leech tension and twist.8:08 Without a traveler, a sailor must rely on the boom vang to control twist, but they cannot achieve an optimal, centered boom position while maintaining proper sail shape.8:32 On reaching points of sail, the traveler provides little benefit because the boom is already outboard; in these conditions, the vang is the primary tool for controlling twist.6:33 While a traveler is not strictly necessary for casual cruising, it remains essential for competitive racing and achieving optimal upwind performance.9:52
