Adriano Plotzky, eight years a liveaboard sailor now anchored for two months on the Rio Vazabarris in Aracaju, Brazil, reflects on why people in 1970s and 1980s television footage looked decades older than their stated ages — interviewees in their early 20s appearing to be in their 40s.Watch He identifies several overlapping causes: social pressure to project maturity early, expressed through posture, clothing, haircuts, and facial hair; limited access to sunscreen, dentists, and cosmetics; sun exposure; diet; and water consumption.1:18 He argues that mindset and self-image amplify all the other factors.1:18 At 46, he connects the historical observation to his own aging, noting his first gray hair at 28 and a recent onset of presbyopia.4:27 He discusses the term NOTE (New Older Living Trend), a LinkedIn-circulated concept describing how people today age with greater autonomy, health, and continued learning compared to past generations.6:29 He contrasts this with retirement's origins in 19th-century Germany, where the qualifying age was 70 and life expectancy was 35–39 years, against Brazil's current 76-year average.25:42 The practical takeaway: physical health habits — exercise, sun protection — matter, but attitude and self-conception shape how aging looks and feels as much as biology does.
