The Hinckley Sou'wester 51, named Momentum, is a 51-foot, McCurdy & Rhodes-designed cruiser launched in 1985. Unlike the majority of the model line, which features centerboards, this vessel utilizes a deep keel. The current owner modified the boat for short-handed and single-handed sailing by installing a Leisure Furl system with cockpit-led electric winches and a wired remote for the mainsheet. A recent refit replaced the original rig with a carbon mast, reducing weight by 450 pounds and increasing height by five feet. This modification improved sail handling by separating the genoa and spinnaker furlers while adding 115 square feet of sail area. The boat features integrated systems designed for accessibility, a result of the original owner’s collaboration with the construction team. Momentum has completed five Bermuda races and a direct transatlantic passage from Bermuda to Troon, Scotland, with a crew of four. The vessel maintains high performance in light and medium air, often sailing at wind speed.
