Goolden times the transit for slack water to avoid currents that can reach 9 knots, though he encounters more resistance than expected when punching through at low tide. He sails the inlet under jib alone to maintain a steady 4-knot speed and avoid jibing in the narrow, steep-sided channel. On the return trip, he transits at high water, noting that the increased width and lack of current make the passage significantly easier.
