The passage requires transiting the narrow Malibu Rapids, which measure only 40 feet wide at their tightest point. Goolden times the transit for slack water to avoid currents that can reach 9 knots, though he encounters more resistance than expected when punching through at low tide. He sails the inlet under jib alone to maintain a steady 4-knot speed and avoid jibing in the narrow, steep-sided channel. On the return trip, he transits at high water, noting that the increased width and lack of current make the passage significantly easier. The journey includes a hike to examine horizontal rock formations of unknown origin. Between sailing segments, Goolden practices a fiddle crafted by Daniel Graham from timber offcuts salvaged during the Tally Ho restoration.
