Achieving proper film thickness is the primary goal when applying two-part marine primer, rather than attempting to roll a perfectly smooth finish. Over-reducing primer to improve flow and smoothness causes the coating to become too thin, which leads to burn-through during the necessary sanding process. When sanding thin coats, the applicator risks exposing the underlying fairing compound or gel coat, creating visible spots that require additional layers of paint to cover.
For standard two-part primers, mix the reducer at 12 to 15 percent. Apply the material with as few roller strokes as possible to prevent premature solvent evaporation, which inhibits leveling. If working in high temperatures, direct sunlight, or windy conditions, increase the reducer slightly—up to 20 percent—but compensate by applying an extra coat rather than overworking the surface. While one-part primers cure through solvent evaporation, two-part materials rely on a chemical reaction, allowing for a heavier, more durable application. Sanding is an unavoidable step in the finishing process, and maintaining adequate film thickness ensures the surface can be leveled without compromising the primer layer.
