A comprehensive, multi-year refit of a Deerfoot 61 sailboat involves a complete structural and interior redesign, including a new deck, keel, and rudder. The owner constructed a dedicated workshop building to house the 61-foot hull during the project. The deck construction utilizes three layers of marine plywood scarfed together and finished with 1708 fiberglass, allowing for flexible hardware placement. To compensate for the added weight of the plywood deck, the boat’s draft was increased. The interior layout was modified to feature a large engine room and a reconfigured stateroom arrangement, with bulkheads tabbed to the hull using a specialized technique involving cutouts in the plywood to pass fiberglass through. The project includes custom engineering such as a sliding binnacle for improved visibility while docking, a retractable screen system for the companionway, and a watertight transom hatch operated by a red-line locking mechanism. A 5.5-kilowatt Next-Gen generator is housed in a custom sound-insulated compartment.
