The Morgan Yachts OUT ISLAND 41 is a masthead sloop designed by Charles Morgan Jr. and built by Morgan Yachts, later Catalina Yachts, from 1971 to the present. This 12.6-meter long, 4.2-meter beam, 1.3-meter draft, 12247 kg displacement vessel was one of the most popular production boats of its size, with nearly half going into charter service. The design underwent numerous modifications, leading to variations in dimensions and interior layouts; early models typically featured Perkins 4-108 or Westerbeke 4-107 engines, later shifting to Perkins 4-154, and eventually Yanmar diesels in the OUT ISLAND 41 CLASSIC after Catalina's acquisition. Aboard *KYAN II*, a ketch-rigged OUT ISLAND 41, the crew installed a SeaWater Pro reverse osmosis water maker, replacing a Renogy MPPT DC-to-DC charger with a Victron unit, and upgraded teak handrails to stainless steel grab bars using threaded inserts for a 5,000-pound holding capacity.2:23 They navigated the ICW from Maryland to Florida, encountering 35-knot gusts and hurricane threats, and used a diesel heater and solar power to manage cold temperatures.3:21 The crew performed maintenance such as reinforcing davits with silver solder, repairing roller furler foils, and installing a side-mounted swim ladder.10:48 They also integrated a Starlink system, achieving 160 megabits per second, and used Tear-Aid polymer patches to secure solar panels to the bimini.4:57
