A sailor competing in the Skagen Race experienced a rig failure when an intermediate shroud unscrewed and detached while sailing in moderate conditions. The crew successfully stabilized the mast by tacking and securing the shroud with Dyneema in Smögen, allowing them to complete the passage under a reefed mainsail. Separately, the maintenance of faded gelcoat on a blue-hulled boat was addressed by wet-sanding with Mirka foam pads (1000 to 4000 grit) followed by the application of a ceramic coating, which provides a hydrophobic, hard-wearing finish lasting up to three years. Battery-powered orbital polishers, including budget-friendly options from Biltema and Citronic, offer increased mobility over corded tools for cockpit and deck maintenance, though battery capacity remains a limiting factor for large-scale jobs.
