The crew of a Prout Ltd. Snowgoose 37 Elite applies a DIY copper-based anti-fouling system to their catamaran’s hulls while in a boatyard.1:18 To create the coating, they mix solvent-free epoxy resin with 320-mesh pure copper powder at a ratio of 1.9 kilograms of powder per liter of resin.14:39 Before application, the team spends six days sanding the hull to remove old finish and then rolls on a clear epoxy barrier coat to seal the surface.0:43 They apply the copper-loaded epoxy in multiple layers, timing each subsequent coat to ensure it is applied "wet-on-tacky" to maintain a chemical bond between layers.15:51 Because the mixture is heavy, they continuously stir the paint to keep the copper particles suspended.14:52 After the final coat cures, the plan requires sanding the surface with 600-grit paper to expose the copper particles to the water.2:36 The project aims to create a long-lasting, hard anti-fouling surface as a cost-effective alternative to commercial products.1:19
