The Rival 34 is a Peter Brett-designed masthead sloop, built from 1972 to the present by Southern Shipbuilding and Marine Construction Ltd., featuring a fin keel with a rudder on skeg. This 10.4-meter (34-foot) sailboat has a 3.0-meter beam, a 1.8-meter draft, and displaces 5397 kg. Aboard *The Sailing Brothers*, the Rival 34 *Atlas* has completed extensive passages, including a 47-mile transit in the Bahamas in 18-to-25-knot winds and an 82.5-mile overnight sail from Vanuatu to Malakula Island without engine use. The crew navigated poorly charted reefs in Fiji, maintaining a daylight-only schedule, and relocated to Savu Savu to shelter from 30-to-40-knot gales. They have sailed the Australian coast, timing a bar crossing at Tweed Heads for high tide to manage shifting sandbanks and strong currents. The crew has undertaken significant refit projects, funding new tri-radial sails with three reefs, a 20-kilogram Rocna Mark 2 anchor, and plans for new standing rigging and deck paint through a GoFundMe campaign.
