To recover, the J/99 crew opted for a tactical route down the center of the fjord to maximize wind pressure, executing approximately 100 jibes while the majority of the fleet hugged the eastern shore. This strategy allowed them to overtake the competition and finish 10 minutes ahead of their rivals. Gustafsson attributes the win to positioning on the racecourse rather than boat speed advantages in light air. He notes the ongoing challenge of balancing complex, data-driven handicapping systems with the need for rules that remain understandable to all competitors.
