Extensive deck core rot represents a second major strike, as re-coring a soft deck is labor-intensive, expensive, and often leads to abandoned projects. A damaged or missing mast constitutes a third critical concern, as sourcing and shipping replacement spars for older vessels is difficult and costly. Conversely, bad sails and aging standing rigging are not deal-breakers; used sails are readily available from racing fleets, and rigging can be replaced incrementally by bringing individual stays to a rigger.
