Solvent Testing To Determine If You're Working With A 1 Or 2 Part Paint

O que este vídeo aborda

To determine if an existing hull finish is a one-part or two-part paint, perform a solvent test by taping a solvent-soaked rag or cotton ball to an obscure area of the hull for 30 minutes. If the paint wrinkles, bubbles, or melts, the surface is a one-part paint and is incompatible with two-part topcoats, which will cause the finish to lift and wrinkle during application. If the surface remains intact, it is a two-part paint and can be overcoated after proper scuffing and priming. For Awlgrip systems, use T-006 epoxy reducer for the test, as it is a more aggressive solvent that ensures compatibility. Additionally, perform an adhesion test by cutting a cross-hatch grid into the paint with a razor and applying strong tape, such as shrink-wrap tape, then pulling it off quickly to check for lifting. A successful solvent test confirms the existing finish can be overcoated without stripping the hull to bare fiberglass.
