Episode V3 Feathering Propellor

August 6, 2009 · 2 min · 85K views

What this video covers

Paul Shard inspects the four-bladed VariProp feathering propeller on his sailboat while the vessel is hauled out for maintenance.▶ 0:33 The propeller design prioritizes efficient power delivery under engine load while minimizing drag during sailing. Unlike fixed propellers that create significant resistance, the VariProp blades automatically rotate to a feathered position when the transmission is shifted into neutral.▶ 0:44 This mechanism reduces drag and can increase sailing speed by half to a full knot in light air.▶ 1:22 While the manufacturer suggests a minimum boat speed of three to four knots to initiate feathering, practical experience shows the blades feather at speeds as low as two knots.▶ 1:54 The inspection also includes a check of the shaft, stern gear, and sacrificial zinc anodes, which remain in serviceable condition.▶ 0:00 Feathering propellers offer a performance compromise between the high thrust of large fixed blades and the low drag of smaller, less efficient designs.
