Seldén Furling Mainsail Part 3 (4): Furling the Main Sail

What this video covers

A Hallberg-Rassy 46 with a Seldén in-mast furling mainsail demonstrates the step-by-step procedure for furling the mainsail while underway. The boat sails at roughly 60 degrees on either tack to keep the sail loaded but not flogging.▶ 0:09 Before furling, the kicker is set so the boom sits just under 90 degrees to the mast; on a partially rigged boat, releasing the backstay tensioner slightly straightens the mast.▶ 0:13 The mainsheet clutch is closed to hold the boom steady, then the outhaul clutch is released to dump tension and create a deep belly in the sail — the target state is no pressure and no flapping.▶ 0:32 The outhaul is eased while the "main in" button is pressed simultaneously, feeding the sail into the mast.▶ 1:06 Progress is monitored batten by batten, pausing if needed to confirm each batten enters parallel — bottom and top batten tips tracking in together.▶ 1:36 As sail area decreases and pressure drops, the mainsheet can be trimmed slightly to prevent boom swing.▶ 1:52 Easing the outhaul and pressing "main in" together, while watching batten alignment, is the key to a clean furl every time.
