Teak and Holly Sole Repair The RIGHT Way! Sailboat DIY Projects

June 14, 2025 · 8 min · 16K views

What this video covers

Refinishing water-damaged teak and holly cabin sole veneer requires careful assessment of the depth of moisture penetration. On a 2006 Tartan 34, water intrusion from an open port light caused dark staining and bubbling in the thin veneer.▶ 0:47 Because the damaged panel was difficult to remove without disturbing vertical cabinetry, the repairer cut the panel at existing transition points to facilitate removal.▶ 2:40 After stripping the top layer of varnish with a heat gun and putty knife, the factory-applied Valspar UltraGuard Premium Conversion Varnish was sanded down using 150-grit sandpaper.▶ 3:09 Remaining dark stains were treated with oxalic acid, applied in two stages and allowed to dry overnight between applications to bleach the wood.▶ 4:48 Once clean, the surface was sealed with System 3 S1 Sealer, a low-viscosity two-part epoxy, and finished with three coats of Interlux Goldspar satin polyurethane varnish.▶ 5:40 Proper surface preparation and patience with wood bleaching are essential for restoring stained teak and holly veneer to factory condition.
