The Granada Yachts 31 is a masthead sloop designed by Elvstrøm, Kjølrulff, and Jan Kjølrulff, built by Gesten Glasfiber Badevrft and Granada Yachts A from 1977 to 1982. It has a fin keel with a spade rudder, measures 9.4 meters LOA, 3.0 meters beam, 1.8 meters draft, and displaces 3600 kg. Aboard an OE 32, a similar model, Are Wiig experienced two knockdowns and a full inversion south of South Africa during the 2018 Golden Globe Race, resulting in a broken mast, cracked windows, and a flooded cabin.38:36 Wiig cut the rig free, jury-rigged, repaired the windvane, and sailed 400 miles to Cape Town.40:30 He previously sailed a Granada 30, a Granada 31 with a shortened stern, in the 1988 OSTAR, advocating for running all sail controls aft to the cockpit for solo sailing.2:55
