If you run a sailing channel on YouTube, there’s a good chance you’re listed here. This page explains what that means, what it does for you, and the choices you have.
What the index does
sailing.directory helps sailors find the knowledge inside your videos — the anchorage advice from 2019, the rigging walkthrough buried in episode 47. Every result links straight to your video on YouTube, at the relevant moment. We host nothing, we rehost nothing, and we never put ads against your listing. The index exists to send viewers to you — including for videos the algorithm stopped recommending years ago.
Your controls
Every listed channel can choose, in plain terms:
- Search depth — whether your videos answer questions fully, appear by title and description only, or stay out of search entirely.
- Position on the chart — your last reported position shows only approximately (within about 11 km) by default; you can limit it to a region name, hide it altogether, or — if you're someone who shares your position openly in your videos — choose to show it exactly.
- Your boat's make & model — whether the model you sail appears on your listing and on boat pages, or stays private.
- Paid research products — whether your videos may inform paid research summaries. You can say no and remain fully listed.
- Complete removal — your channel comes off the index entirely and is never re-added, even if our discovery tools find it again.
How to make a change
It takes a few minutes, start to finish, and no email back-and-forth:
- Sign in with Google and open your creator dashboard.
- Find your channel and ask to claim it — we show you a short code, right there on the page.
- Paste the code anywhere in your YouTube channel description, then press “Check now.” The moment we see it, you’re verified — you can remove the code right away.
- Adjust anything from the controls above. Changes apply immediately, and every one is confirmed back to you by email.
Prefer not to edit your description? Write to hello@sailing.directory from an address connected to your channel and a person will verify you by hand — usually within a couple of days.
Claiming your listing
Claiming works the same way — the code proves the channel is yours. Verified creators manage their own listing: privacy choices, a direct line to us, and editorial say over how the channel is presented as the directory grows.
