The short version: we collect very little, we sell nothing, and nothing here tracks you around the internet.

What we collect

• Search queries. Queries you type are retained to make results faster and better (popular questions are answered from a cache) and to understand what sailors are looking for. They are not linked to your identity.
• Sign-in details (contributors only). If you sign in with Google as a contributor, we store your name, email address, and avatar. Visitors browsing or searching never sign in and are never identified.
• Aggregate analytics. We use privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics: page views and events in aggregate, no cross-site tracking, no advertising identifiers, no personal profiles.
• Email addresses you give us. If you subscribe to our email, we store your address with the double-opt-in consent record. Unsubscribe links are in every email; unsubscribing deletes you from the list.
• Verified creators. While you're signed in as a verified channel owner, we keep a record of the searches and questions you run here, so we can understand what creators as a group need from the directory. It's visible only to site admins, is never published or shared, and is retained as part of our records.

Founding Sailors

If you become a Founding Sailor you have an account with us. To take your payment and recognise your support, we store your name and email address, and — from our payment processor, Stripe — a customer reference and the amount you paid. We never see or store your card details; Stripe handles the card.

Founding Sailors may add a short entry to the public manifest on the home-page globe: a display name, a home port, a YouTube or Instagram handle, and a one-line message. You choose what appears, field by field — every field starts hidden until you turn it on. Your email address is never shown unless you deliberately switch it on, and it starts off with a clear warning. You can edit or clear your manifest whenever you like, or write to hello@sailing.directory to remove your details entirely.

Cookies

Two, both functional: a session cookie if you sign in as a contributor, and a small preference for your chosen display mode (dark, light, or the night modes). No advertising or tracking cookies.

What we never do

• Sell or share personal data with advertisers or data brokers.
• Run third-party ad trackers.
• Require an account to browse or search.
