Preparing a boat transom for a new Coosa board core requires extensive surface leveling and structural modification. To ensure a flush fit for the two-inch thick Coosa laminate, the transom trough must be ground down to remove existing lips and previous owner modifications. Side stringer pockets require cutting and grinding to allow the core to drop into place. To prevent thickened epoxy from leaking into the Armstrong bracket’s internal flotation chamber during installation, each of the 25 mounting holes is dished out by approximately two millimeters. A single layer of fiberglass cloth is then applied over each hole using laminating polyester resin. Once cured, these patches are sealed with wax-added gel coat and the surrounding area is faired with compound to create a level bonding surface. Keeping fairing compound thickness under a quarter-inch ensures structural integrity, with deeper voids requiring additional fiberglass buildup rather than excessive filler.
