Louis Sauzedde and his assistant install the sole of a 23-foot V-bottom skiff by gluing 1 1/8-inch edge-grain Atlantic white cedar planks directly to the chine logs using pre-thickened epoxy.1:58 To secure the planks during the curing process without leaving permanent holes or hardened steel fasteners that could damage future planing tools, they use common eight-penny nails driven through washers.4:46 Once the epoxy sets, they remove the nails and washers, leaving a clean, glue-only bond.8:46 After the sole is secured, Sauzedde uses an electric plane to rough-cut the bevels along the hull’s transition angles, noting that the final fairing requires the keelson to be installed first to serve as a reference guide.12:21 A rabbit plane cleans the end grain of the sole planks to expose the seam between the chine and side planking, which acts as a control line for the final shaping.13:59
