The Bavaria Yachts 300 is a 9.6-meter fractional sloop designed by Axel Mohnhaupt and built by Bavaria Yachts since 1989. It features a fin keel with a bulb and a spade rudder, a 1.6-meter draft, and displaces 3400 kg. Aboard SEILmagasinet, a sailor completed a five-year circumnavigation on a 30-foot Bavaria, traversing the Panama Canal and crossing the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The vessel dismasted between the Azores and France after a collision damaged the forestay fitting, causing the mast to collapse during reefing in 13 m/s winds. The sailor noted the Bavaria 30 lacks a redundant forestay, suggesting a spinnaker halyard as a backup. Other failures included a broken boom from an accidental gybe and the loss of both the windvane and wind generator during a South Atlantic crossing, requiring daily engine use for battery charging. Despite these issues, the sailor considered the Bavaria 30 a capable and cost-effective bluewater boat, emphasizing self-reliance for repairs, the utility of a watermaker in the Pacific, and AIS for solo night watches.
