A delivery crew aboard a 52-foot Amel yacht sailing from Gibraltar toward the United Kingdom encountered a pod of orcas southwest of Barbate, Spain.0:13 The orcas struck the hull, keel, and rudder, causing the steering wheel to spin violently for nearly two hours.0:56 The crew followed safety protocols by shutting down all systems and drifting, which is the recommended response to minimize interaction and prevent rudder destruction.1:34 The rudder sustained partial damage but remained functional, allowing the crew to maintain steering control.2:21
