Windelo is doing things differently – the Windelo 50

What this video covers

Windelo Catamarans, based in France, manufactures the Windelo 50 and 54 series using eco-friendly composite materials, including volcanic basalt fiber and recycled PET foam. These catamarans feature a modular open-plan layout with a forward cockpit and helm station integrated into the saloon, allowing the crew to manage sail controls and navigation while remaining protected from the elements. The vessels utilize a hybrid electric propulsion system, solar panels, and hydro-generation to achieve energy autonomy during ocean crossings. Despite these design advantages, the Windelo 50 presents specific maintenance and operational challenges. The lack of opening deck hatches, necessitated by solar panel placement, can restrict ventilation. The windlass location at the central sailing dashboard risks depositing anchor chain debris in the primary living area. Additionally, the daggerboard trunks occupy significant interior cabin space, and the custom curved panoramic windows present potential long-term replacement difficulties if the manufacturer ceases production.
