What this video covers
Jackson "Velho Jack" Ribeiro Alves and his wife Angelita Rumor Alves, known as the Família Velho Jack, join host Marina Guedes on episode 231 of Maré Sonora.1:24 The couple, based for a decade in Paraty, built a liveaboard and sailing-content career from a background in automotive mechanics and tattooing. Jack's mechanical training — diesel engines, hydraulics, electrics — gave them the technical self-sufficiency that underpins their reputation for boat maintenance and brokerage, including repeated work on a Fastcat 395 now being delivered to a new owner in Rio de Janeiro. A cold front and cyclone that struck Paraty snapped the mooring line of their boat Onix, which then fouled a schooner and lost its mast — just 12 days before a sailing event they had organized in Paraty.30:12 Despite having no budget, no sponsors, and only three months of planning, they staged the first Regata Biclinc, named in tribute to Amir Klink after receiving his personal permission.45:20 The event aimed to be inclusive and community-focused, filling a gap in Paraty's sailing calendar. They also produced a children's knot-tying book featuring a fictional pirate captain.1:03:15 A second edition of the regata is planned. The mast loss taught them to accept help from their community rather than managing every crisis alone.27:46
