Simple Handline vs Expensive Rod & Reel

What this video covers

Offshore sailors can effectively supplement their food supply using handlines rather than expensive rod-and-reel setups. A handline system relies on a heavy-duty bungee cord as a shock absorber to tire out the fish, paired with 300-pound test line and paracord. This configuration allows a crew to pull fish directly into the cockpit without a gaff, as the line’s strength and the fish’s inability to swim underwater—a phenomenon known as "skiing"—reduce resistance. For optimal results, lures should pop out of the water every one to three seconds to create a bubble trail, with the line length set at 1.5 to 3 boat lengths. Safety remains critical; users should wear gloves, never wrap the line around their hands, and use a stripping bucket to prevent tangles. If a fish is too large, such as a marlin, the setup is designed to straighten the hook rather than break the gear. Handlines require minimal maintenance and cost significantly less than conventional trolling equipment.
