What this video covers

Brooklin Boat Yard in Brooklin, Maine, specialises in custom boat construction using a hybrid approach that combines traditional wood techniques with modern carbon fibre and foam composites. The yard avoids full-mould production, instead utilising strip-planked wood hulls reinforced with carbon fibre and foam cores to achieve high strength-to-weight ratios without the tooling costs of traditional composite manufacturing. Engineers at the yard balance the structural properties of wood and carbon, noting that both materials share similar elongation-to-fracture characteristics, which allows them to function effectively as a unified laminate. The facility manages roughly 40,000 labour hours annually for new builds and an equal amount for restoration and maintenance projects, including work on large motor sailors and classic vessels. Technical processes include the use of 2205 stainless steel or aqua metal for hardware to prevent galling, and the integration of 3D-printed titanium components. The yard also performs complex keel installations, utilising wax-coated pockets and epoxy potting to allow for future keel swaps for performance tuning.
