LINE DRILLS FOR MED MASTERCLASS

14 July 2025 · 19 min · 23K views

What this video covers

Alexandros Retsinas runs line-handling drills at Perdika as preparation for a Mediterranean Masterclass sailing course running August 2–16, departing from Alimos and sailing through the Cyclades before returning to Alimos. The drills cover the full sequence of Med mooring line work: coiling lines without creating twists in the line (every coil becomes a twist that jams in cleats), making the largest possible loops for control, leading lines through bow rollers and securing to cleats with a round turn and two half-hitches, and managing line tension with one hand while cleating. A crew member identified as Giorgos assists throughout. Specific techniques demonstrated include the "strip" method — two lines crossed and secured to the same cleat — which allows a single crew member to open a loop and pass it over a bollard without assistance. Common errors addressed: dropping slack lines into the water where they foul the propeller, taking only one round turn before cleating (which allows the line to slip under load), and pulling in slack too quickly before the line is properly secured. The session ends with a drill passing a line ashore, taking two round turns on a bollard, and signaling readiness before tensioning.
