What this video covers
Michaela Bower is preparing for a solo circumnavigation aboard her San Juan 30, named Swirl.2:41 An experienced mountaineer and rock climber, Bower intends to complete the voyage to provide visibility for the transgender and queer community, noting that few openly trans sailors have documented such a journey.28:40 She plans to depart after July 29th, following her final land-based commitments.1:00:26
The boat currently lacks an inboard engine and relies on an outboard motor mounted on the stern.1:01:19 Bower is in the process of installing a refurbished 2009 Navik wind vane, which presents a logistical challenge due to limited space on the vessel's narrow IOR-style stern.1:01:43 She emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between perceived risk and actual danger, a skill she developed through years of trad climbing and managing high-stress situations like breaking a jib sheet in 20-knot winds.37:47 Her primary goal is to complete the circumnavigation, though she defines success as providing a visible example for others facing similar personal hurdles.53:10
