What this video covers

A 5:15 a.m. departure from San Pedro, California, begins a motor-sail transit to the Isthmus on Catalina Island.Watch The crew encounters calm seas and light winds, necessitating motoring for the duration of the trip. During the passage, the Raymarine autopilot fails to engage initially; the crew discovers that the system requires the drive unit’s plunger to be engaged before powering on the controller to function correctly. Upon arrival at the Isthmus, the crew successfully secures the boat to a mooring in Cherry Cove on the second attempt. The trip includes testing a new 2.5-horsepower outboard on the dinghy and observing a humpback whale near the vessel. On the return leg, the crew maintains a 1-mile closest point of approach (CPA) with the 287-meter tanker Alaska Legend while navigating the traffic separation scheme. Motor-sailing with a Genoa and staysail increases speed from 6 to 7 knots. The vessel returns to the dock in San Pedro without incident.
