What this video covers
Josh Kali's home-built ALMA Globe 580, named Skookum, receives a detailed walkthrough at Voodoo Marina in Fiji during the Golden Globe Race stopover, conducted by Don McIntyre.0:18 The hull retains a showroom finish after offshore racing because Kali applied seven coats of Alexseal paint — two coats of high-build primer, two of finish primer, and three of topcoat — straight from the gun, never buffed.1:41 Running rigging is 100% Harken with the exception of Spinlock clutches; the bobstay is Dyneema for easy field replacement, tensioned with a rigging screw.2:30 Hatches are Lewmar.2:20 The wind vane is a servo-pendulum system; Kali describes learning to balance the boat so the vane needs minimal correction, and contrasts it with the Hydrovane auxiliary-rudder type.7:00 Below, a custom electrical panel houses two battery monitors, an EchoMax radar reflector, solar MPPT breakers, and a 110-volt shore-power outlet wired through labeled cable runs in a dedicated wire chase — an installation Kali estimates at six weeks of work.20:18 Storage runs to six under-floor compartments forward.18:49 Kali, a former marine technician who commissioned Ocean Alexander motor yachts on the US West Coast, estimates the build at roughly 3,000 hours; the steel keel was laser-cut and welded by Ballard Marine Fabrications in Seattle, with keel-bolt caps machined by Lacey Machine Works.26:52 Hands-on professional experience before building, and tackling the project one step at a time, are the factors Kali credits for the boat's quality.25:59
