What this video covers
Jeanne Socrates, recording from aboard Naraida in Taha'a, French Polynesia, delivers her acceptance speech for induction into the Cape Horn Hall of Fame on 21 September 2023.Watch She is unable to attend the ceremony in Les Sables d'Olonne in person because she is departing the following morning for Tonga, continuing a Pacific crossing from Mexico to Australia.0:07 She notes she did not set foot on a dinghy until nearly age 48 and first sailed a yacht in the Solent at almost 52.0:44 She has rounded Cape Horn three times, twice as part of a non-stop circumnavigation.1:07 Her most recent rounding came on a Midsummer's night, well after midnight, in twilight, with a relatively calm approach — she saw the white light flashing against the cape's silhouette — followed immediately by a sharp deterioration into storm conditions once she passed the cape's longitude.1:24 She closes by wishing the Mini Transat fleet well ahead of their Sunday start.2:14
