What this video covers
The crew of Namasté, a 47-nautical-mile passage from Dominica to Schoelcher, Martinique, is preparing for a multi-year voyage toward the Pacific. To mitigate the risk of autopilot failure during long offshore legs, they are installing a windvane self-steering system. Working with a local welder in Martinique, they fabricated a custom aluminum mounting frame for the windvane on the stern and reinforced the stainless steel arch to prevent movement under load. The refit also addressed a recurring water infiltration issue in the shower stall, which required stripping the area, applying fiberglass, and finishing with gelcoat. Additionally, they installed a custom chain guide on the windlass using threaded rods and pads to prevent the chain from jumping during deployment. While the anemometer remains non-functional after a lightning strike, the boat is otherwise prepared for a route through the Caribbean, Central America, and eventually the Panama Canal.
