What this video covers
High-output alternator systems, such as the Integral, serve as viable replacements for traditional diesel generators on cruising yachts by converting a standard propulsion engine into a high-capacity power source. These systems utilise sophisticated software to monitor engine parameters and battery states, allowing a 40-horsepower engine to generate up to eight kilowatts of electricity without overloading the motor. Successful implementation requires a large-capacity lithium-ion battery bank to store the energy produced during engine operation. This configuration enables yachts, particularly catamarans equipped with dual systems, to power heavy loads like multiple air conditioning units overnight without running a dedicated generator. While the initial cost of installing high-output alternators and sufficient lithium-ion storage remains high, the setup provides significant electrical independence for remote-area cruising. Integrating high-output alternators with large lithium-ion banks eliminates the need for a standalone generator by maximising energy production during routine engine use.
