What this video covers
The crew of the 12-ton, tiller-steered Magic Carpet is completing a five-year refit and preparing to relaunch. Final tasks include installing a Pelagic Heavy Duty Tiller Pilot, which required a custom-welded bracket mounted to the bulwarks to avoid hatch interference and allow for 15 degrees of movement. The crew replaced 304 stainless steel stanchion bolts with 316-grade hardware to prevent hull staining. Additional projects included installing a diesel tank gauge, adding chafe protection to the dinghy, and troubleshooting a Dickinson stove by cleaning the carburetor to resolve a fuel flow blockage. The crew also mounted a Starlink antenna to the transom for connectivity. After clearing out a rented storage container, the boat is scheduled for a crane lift back into the water. Taking time to use the cockpit for meals during the final stages of a refit helps maintain morale and perspective during the transition from a work zone to a living space.
