When routing wires through bulkheads, create larger openings initially to prevent the need for multiple, overlapping holes later. Always verify wire gauge and polarity before installation, as mixing gauges—such as 1-gauge and 2-gauge cabling—or misidentifying NMEA 2000 male and female connectors creates significant rework. Standardize on blade fuses rather than glass fuses for easier identification and durability. Use tinned wire exclusively to prevent corrosion, and apply protective coatings like Boeshield T-9 to connections in damp areas like lazarettes. Incorporate drip loops into all wiring runs to prevent condensation from reaching terminal blocks. Pre-running extra wires during major projects saves time on future upgrades, even if terminations are deferred. Proper labeling and color-coded wiring remain essential for long-term maintenance and troubleshooting.
