What this video covers
Jeanne Socrates experiences a total loss of propulsion while motor-sailing towards Auckland, New Zealand, in the Hauraki Gulf.Watch With both autopilot systems out for service, she manages the vessel solo while navigating near coastal shallows and rocks.0:06 After the engine stops providing thrust despite the prop shaft spinning, she suspects a fouled propeller. Following advice from Taupo Maritime Radio, she heaves-to and engages the engine in reverse to clear the obstruction. A loud thud confirms the release of the debris, and subsequent testing in forward gear restores the vessel to six knots of speed. During the two-hour ordeal, she contends with 22-knot south-west winds and choppy seas. The vessel continues towards Westhaven Marina, where the autopilot will be reinstalled. Heaving-to and reversing the engine can successfully clear debris from a folding propeller.
