The Swan 53 is a 16.1-meter masthead sloop designed by German Frers and built by Nautor from 1987 to 1995, featuring a fin keel with a spade rudder. A later, entirely different Swan 53 design by Frers appeared in 2004. The model was available with a taller rig option and a keel/centerboard variant. Aboard *Sterner*, a Swan 53 prepared for the Ocean Globe Race, the crew replaced the original hydraulic in-mast furling with a manual profile furler and a slab-reefing mainsail, reinforcing the mainsail for four reefs.8:25 They added a 10mm aluminum plate to the mast to stiffen it for Southern Ocean conditions and rebuilt all original Lewmar winches.2:12 The crew relocated instrument cubbies to the pedestal and installed a Lewmar winch for the traveler and mainsheet, enabling cockpit control of sails in heavy weather.4:10 The 2005 Swan 53 *GAIA* underwent a 2023 refit including new standing rigging, topside paint, and teak decking, and features a carbon mast with a repainted furling boom, new electric motor, and a new lithium house battery bank with solar panels.0:21 The *GAIA*'s deck layout includes twin wheels, a Luma windlass, and a removable bowsprit for asymmetric spinnakers.1:33 The Bluewater 56, designed by Hermann Freyr, shares a hull design with the Swan 53.6:06
