The Cal Boats 40 is a 12.0-meter masthead sloop with a fin keel and spade rudder, designed by C. William Lapworth and built by Jensen Marine from 1963 to 1971. With 160 units produced, it became one of the most influential designs and successful racing boats of its era. The design was commissioned by George Griffith, who backed the construction of the first ten boats. Its specifications include a 3.4-meter beam, 1.7-meter draft, and 6803 kg displacement.16:42 A single raised deck variant was also built. James Evenson distinguishes Jensen-era Cal 40s as high-quality boats. Current class rules, updated in 2005, specify maximum dimensions for its rig.
