The Dufour Yachts 40 is a fractional sloop designed by Umberto Felci, built by Dufour Yachts from 2005 to the present, with a fin with bulb and spade rudder hull, an LOA of 12.3 meters, a beam of 3.9 meters, a draft of 1.6 meters, and a displacement of 7800 kg. Hans Hellinger and his wife, Inma, completed a 12-year circumnavigation aboard their Dufour 40 Performance, *Tuvalu*, departing in 2010 after a year of preparation.6:57 Aboard *Tuvalu*, the crew used PredictWind via satellite phone for weather routing and Iridium for communication. Hellinger emphasizes the necessity of a "Plan B" for technical and safety contingencies, noting that ocean passages require adapting to distinct wind patterns and cultural landscapes.23:20 The couple chose the Dufour 40 for its capability for longer passages, despite it being a production fiberglass boat.14:12 Common maintenance issues seen on the Dufour 40 include water ingress through hatches, acrylic windows, and deck cable glands, which require proactive sealing.58:03
