How my Windvane Works, Aries Windvane Breakdown

2 December 2024 · 13 min · 5K views

What this video covers

The Aries windvane, a servo-pendulum self-steering system, operates by using a wind-sensing blade to pivot a submerged hydro-blade, which then exerts leverage on the boat's tiller to correct course. The system consists of a main swivel arm, two control arms, and a breakaway wooden wind blade. Control lines run from the unit to the tiller, where they are secured via jam cleats and a chain attachment. To adjust the course, the operator clicks the control lines to rotate the wind blade, with each click representing approximately six degrees of heading change. Daily maintenance requires lubricating all bushings and moving parts with oil, such as 3-in-1 oil. To prevent chafe on the control lines, the operator should leave extra line length and periodically shift the wear point by adjusting the knots at the tiller. When motoring, the hydro-blade should be tilted up and secured out of the water to reduce drag and prevent bushing wear. Proper balance of the wind blade is critical; it must be lightweight and designed to break away under heavy load to protect the unit.
