What this video covers
Sven Yrvind’s aluminum sailboat suffered severe, structural corrosion while sailing north from Brazil, forcing him to abandon the vessel and return to Sweden. Upon inspection, the hull showed significant degradation, including a spot where a pen could be pushed through the metal. The aluminum manufacturer, Svapain Vetanda, arranged for the boat’s transport to Sweden for a formal investigation by a corrosion institute. After months of delays, the company claimed the boat was seaworthy and attempted to sell it to a Finnish sailor, dismissing the hull breach as a self-inflicted drill hole. Yrvind and a journalist from Dagens Nyheter investigated the hull, confirming the corrosion was genuine. Rather than addressing the defect, the manufacturer destroyed the boat to eliminate the evidence. Yrvind reported the incident to the police, but authorities declined to pursue theft charges, citing the legal complexity of the initial transport agreement and the prohibitive costs of a civil lawsuit.
